Sometimes I feel as though every cell that exists within my body is connected to every molecule without. As I travel thousands of kilometres it underscores the fact that I am not a resident of any one island or place, but a part of the whole. I travel the entire Caribbean region as I feed, grow, live and reproduce. I return to the land of my birth to lay my eggs every other year but spend the rest of my time elsewhere. If I am to survive and prosper, I must be offered protection. But there are still islands in my sea where for parts of the year people seek to slaughter. We are all one and if sea turtles are to survive Caribbean people need to stand together and ensure our protection.
There remain islands in the Caribbean where for months each year it is legal to kill endangered sea turtles; for these migratory animals to survive they must be protected throughout our region.
The mesmerising melding of colours in this painting and the majestic depiction of this turtle speaks to the very nature of our island homes, uniquely different but all one.
